Today is Jackie Robinson Day in MLB. I have started a tradition with a friend of mine of always going to a game on this day. Here are a few reasons why I love him.
- He broke the color barrier in the major leagues on this day, 1947.
- In politics, he identified as an “Independent” leaning more toward conservative views. He even supported President Nikon’s Vietnam War. What I love about him was how outspoken he was against the party once he realized they did not have his best interests at heart. He didnt leave quietly but educated the masses.
- He co-founded the Freedom National Bank, a black-owned and operated commercial bank in Harlem, NY.
- He protested an invitation to the “Old-Timers” game in 1969 in response to the MLB lack of minorities in the central office or as managers.
- He became a major anti-drug advocate in his later years in direct response to his son’s drug problems.
These are my 5. There are so many more. Whenever, I think of Jackie Robinson, I am always reminded of the Spike Lee’s movie, “Crooklyn”, one of my favorites. I loved the title track of the soundtrack, “Crooklyn Dodgers.” Enjoy.
